Was talking to a large industry vendor today, and they posed the question ... What is a "User Profile"? I think we can all agree it means user data, but does it mean all settings? And maybe more importantly, does it mean all user installed applications? Even device drivers/filters? What about conflicts between stuff users do to their desktops, and then changes made by IT when upgrades/installs/removes are pushed out?

Hi Chris

A bit tentative about the large industry vendor, hopefully they are not a windows based vendor.

However in a windows world it is the Active Directory Group permissions, local permissions, application permissions, policies & data

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776892(VS.85).aspx

How ever their are tools, registry hacks and tweaks to do just about anything. Most modern image deployment tools, in regard to the last 2 lines are used like a sledgehammer - If they find an issue, dont fix it rebuild it first, then spend time on RCA if that doesnt fix it.

No disagreement that Microsoft has an official coded definition of a User Profile. But third party products wouldn't exist (or, more to the point, survive) if that definition actually met the markets needs.

I think that if you ask a user, they would say "Anything I do on my desktop, is mine!" - meaning, their settings, data, AND applications. Who wants to lose their settings or apps when a linked clone update is made? So while Microsoft may have an official statement about user a user profile is, I'm not sure that the industry - and users in particular - agree.

As we find this market moving more towards separation of O/S, IT delivered apps, and the user, I believe we need to rethink what is a user profile.

My bet is that we are debating the terminology and not the need. Maybe it is time to define a new term for "Everything the user needs" and leave the term "User Profile" to Microsoft?

Oh - and to answer your question - the large industry vendor was very windows centric.

Chris

You get no arguement over the "industries" term profiles.

To get back on track though, the topic here under discussion is Profile & Data Management Systems.

I like the Sepago - Now Citrix user profile tool, because it allows me to "enhance" Microsofts implementation of profiles, locally, remotely, etc, etc

Since Mr. Brown is now here - http://search.dabcc.com/media.aspx?id=492

In the following DABCC Virtualization Video Podcast, we are very happy to have Helge Klein from sepago. Helge was the architect of sepagoPROFILE, a user profile management solution bought by Citrix in 2008 whose successor is now available as Citrix Profile management. Helge gives us a deep dive in to the Citrix User Profile Manager technology, how it works, what it takes to install, along with a bit about troubleshooting and migration
